The conscious mind is based in the here and now. We make decisions every minute of every day and those decisions are conscious. Deciding on what your next action is going to be is a conscious decision for instance running a bath, phone a friend.

Most of the time you are only aware of your conscious mind yet how do you know how to turn on the bath? What guides your decisions? Stops you from putting your hand in the flame, stepping out into the road. Supplies the information that you are using in conversation.

Memory and memory is stored in the subconscious. You are always operating on different levels of consciousness yet they operate together. The subconscious is the reservoir of your knowledge it is vast. The storehouse of everything that has ever happened to you. It helps your conscious mind make the decisions you will act out. Foreword planning, those sudden idea's that come to you have already run the gauntlet of your subconscious mind.

The subconscious runs in the background, quietly running all the bodily functions you take for granted. When doing mundane tasks, ironing, driving, shopping (!) your mind is not totally focused on your every move. Consciously, you will be looking about gathering information and pondering on something else, processing it and filing it away subconsciously for a later date. So it is the subconscious that is real driving force behind the person that is you.

The hypnotherapist will work to enable you to relax to a very deep level. This is the level whereby your conscious mind isn't as active, it will go in a type of standby mode giving the hypnotherapist access to the subconscious mind. You are still aware of what's happening but are willing to go with the flow allowing the hypnotherapist to work directly with the subconscious.

Imagine letting someone spring-clean your house, you allow them access to your home; trust them with your personal property. You still monitor the situation, you may be a bit unsure of them, but you are willing to let them help you. Direct them to dust, polish, sort out cupboards, dispose of years of unwanted or unneccesary rubbish. Once it's all done then you can plan for the future, re-design, re-decorate or just sit back and relax content in your own skin.

Through access to the subconcious the hypnotherapist with your guidance will help you sort out the things that you want to happen to help you to do the things you want to be able to do.

DIY - C.D's and Group Therapy.

There are numerous books, C.D's and Groups or Workshops that promise to teach self hypnosis, or to cure you from the smoking habit - lose weight and even to take you back to past lives.

It quite common for people to attend day long seminars for habit control problems and will pay quite hefty amounts of money to do so. These seminars usually held in a hotel suite are treatment en mass. Alternatively ranging from a few pounds to several hundred you can buy CDs or audio tape regimes.

Like reading a newspaper horoscope the chances of making an effective change in this way isn't high. These methods are used for the masses and don't take in to account the individualality of each attendant or listener as a person unique from any other.

Cds or an audio tape given by a professional hypnotherapist after a session or a normal relaxation tape/cd can be beneficial. A personalised tape/cd will be tailored to suit your particular need whereby a relaxation tape/cd should make no other promise other than to help you relax.
